INANA- QUEEN OF HEAVEN AND EARTH
The story of Inanna is deeply woven with the people’s experience of the Earth and Sky.
We all feel, in the rhythms of our bodies and our psyches, that life is a cycle – of life, death, rebirth – of light and dark – of descent and return. We move through times of health and illness, of joy and sadness, of birth and death. Yet, we live in a culture that fosters a denial of death, fills the night with electrical light and views pain, sadness and depression as pathological conditions to be suppressed or eradicated with medication. How then do we find our way through these cycles in our lives in a more healthy and sacred manner?
Inanna was the primary deity in ancient Sumer (as far back as 3000 B.C.E.) Inanna was the daughter of the Moon God and sister of the Sun God. She was “Queen of Heaven and Earth.” She was a fertility goddess yet also a goddess of storms. She was the goddess of sexual love and also of power and right judgment, guiding the people in the living of their lives. Inanna is associated with the planet Venus, and her story describes the Venus cycle from her time as an evening star, to her disappearance and re-emergence as a morning star. In her evening star aspect, Inanna is the goddess of wisdom and of sexuality. In her morning star aspect, she is the goddess of action and power.
